See what the world-famous Birdsville Races is all about! Known as the ‘Melbourne Cup of the Outback', the event has delighted race-goers for more than 125 years and is even listed as one of the ‘100 things to do in Australia before you die'.

The first race meeting was held in 1882. Today, the 12-race program has a prize pool of more than $110,000. Approximately 8000 people descend on Birdsville for a weeklong program of events.

The Birdsville Races happen on the first Saturday in September. The spectacular event is sandwiched between the Betoota Races, which kick off the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival in the last weekend of August; and then the Melbourne Cup of the OUtback , The Birdsville Races, then end on up to Bedourie to finish of the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival.
