The first race meeting was held in 1882. Today, the 12-race program has a prize pool of more than $110,000. Approximately 8000 people descend on Birdsville for a weeklong program of events.
The Birdsville Races happen on the first Saturday in September. The spectacular event is sandwiched between the Betoota Races, which kick off the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival in the last weekend of August; and the Bedourie Races, and Ute & Travellers' Muster on the following Saturday.
